MOON
"Freedom, that´s what a ship is, you know.
It´s not just keel and hull and a deck and sails. That´s what a ship needs.
But what a ship is...is freedom"
- Kapt. Jack Sparrow -
This Koopmans 47, MOON was designed with its classic lines by Dick Koopmans, and was built in Holland at the reputable shipyard Klaas Bood according to the wishes of the first owner. It was put on the water in 2001. MOON is a solid full keel/ centerboard wooden core construction of Red-Cedar and Kevlar inforced fiberglas/ Epoxy, and comes with a high finish teak interior. With the centre board in upper position the draft is only 1,5 m which allows sailing and anchoring in shallow waters. The pilot house and the hard top offer excellent protection in any weather conditions.
The second owner took over the owneship in Malaysia in 2012. During 2014 it received a proper update after lying dormant in Malaysia for several years. After the update they sailed her for just over 40.000 nautical miles through Japan, Canada, Alaska, the west and east coast of USA, Newfoundland and Greenland, ending up in Sweden where it came into my possession in 2023. MOON has given her previous owners wonderful years of cruising and liveaboard in both warm and cold climates.
MOON is equipped for long distance sailing with large capacity of water and diesel and just to name a few; it comes with a watermaker, 2 autopilots and a wind vane steering, 2 chart plotters, updated electric and electronic equipment, Starlink, IridiumGo and 4Gextream LTE internet connections, and 4 heating systems which makes it comfortable to stay onboard even when there is ice in the water.
The layout is set up for 2-4 people. At the entrance you will find the navigation table, a head, a seating area with a table and an aft cabin with double berth. Thanks to the pilot house you have a good view from the navigation table and the seating area. Walking forward you will find a large gally with electric stove and oven, an “office area” with a separate table, seat and storage space and the welcoming saloon with sofa and two comfortable armchairs. In front of the mast bulkhead you find the second head with a shower and a cabin with a double berth. All trough out the boat there is very good space for storage.
Due to its well-thought-out construction, advanced equipment and exquisite features, it works superbly both as an expedition boat and as a home.
(Got the picture from the previous owne, hence the Swedish flag)
The Red Cedar tree is cut into planks that are glued together both inside and out in Kevlar-reinforced fiberglass and epoxy. The advantages of a composite construction are that it is very solid, rigid and relatively light compared to similar construction in aluminum and steel. The Kevlar reinforcement ensures great collision protection. Red Cedar wood has very good insulating grain, which means little condensation in colder areas. In addition, it is also insulated inside. The good insulating ability is also very practical in tropical areas, where the sun is hot all day. The composite construction needs little maintenance, and there is no danger of corrosion or osmosis.
During the update in 2014 the teak deck was torn off, sealed with firberglass and epoxy, and replaced with Cork. This makes the deck absolute water tight, and provides not only good insulation but also great grip when working
on deck, no matter if wet or dry.
MOON comes with a white painted masthead
rig (Holland Spares) with two straight spreaders and a Dimond Jumper wich gives a stable and powerful rig. The cutter rigged masthead rig with twin furling head sails is fully sufficient in most conditions.
The conventional mainsail has
5 battens and 2 reefs and can be hoisted from the cockpit by means of an electric
winch. The two head sails, a yankee and a cutter sail, are both furled from the
cockpit. Together with the spinakker poole the Yankee is easily spread wing on wing together with the mainsail which gives a very effective sail constelation, but also safe and forgiving should the wind pick up fast.
So far the boat has sailed around most of the world, and the fact that it has taken good care of its crew testifies that the very best qualities have been built into it.
"In terms of sailing performance, the point is not how fast you can go; it is how slow you don’t go"
UPGRADES FROM 2023:
A Lombardini Kohler KDI2504M-MP 50 hp natrual aspirated (no turbo) slow revolting industrial engine was installed. At 1650 rpm the boat makes 6.5 knots with a diesel consumption of approx. 3.5 l/h
Sleipner 24V E-170 bow thruster (170kg - 9,9hp) with an integrated inverter for variabel speed.
B&G Zeus3S 12" plotter mounted in a stainless steel boks at the pedestall
Vinter 2023-24:
30mm stainless steel solar arch with 2 x 360W solarpanels, Starlink and IridiumGO antenna
3 x 25.6V 200A Victron Lithium Smart batteries, Victron Smart BMS500 and Victron Cerbo GX.
A loop of hot water from the radiator system is placed under the battery box to heat up the batteries should low temperatures make it necessary.
Victron Multiplus-II 24V charger/ inverter 120A/ 5000A, Orion TR-Smart 24/12V and 12/24V DC2DC, and Victron Solar MPPT Smart Charge Controller 100/30
ElectroMaax 24V 165A aternator with external rectifier gives significant less heat during high loads
Waksespeed 500 alternator regulator are controlled by Victron Cerbo GX and Victron Smart BMS500, thus the setup as "slave"
